In occasione DEL 30° anniversario di “Camera con vista” una rassegna dedicata al cineasta americano James Ivory che sarà a Firenze per l’occasione.
Una selezione di 9 film di James Ivory che non si deve leggere come un omaggio nato da soggetti terzi (come quasi sempre accade) bensì come una precisa intenzione del regista americano di mettere assieme alcuni tra i suoi film più cari. Trovano spazio i classici, pluripremiati dall’Academy, come Camera con vista e Casa Howard ma anche i film degli anni Duemila (Quella sera dorata, 2009, a oggi la sua ultima regia) e opere fondanti della sua carriera, su tutte Maurice. Ivory torna in Italia, dopo esserci nato (artisticamente) nel 1957 quando scelse Venezia come soggetto del suo cortometraggio di laurea alla scuola di cinema USC: Venice: Themes and Variations.
A selection of 9 films by James Ivory that, rather than a homage created by someone else (as is nearly always the case), is more of a precise intention by the American director himself to put together some of his favourite films. It includes Academy award-winning classics such as Room with view and Howards End as well as films from the Noughties (The city of your final destination, 2009, his most recent production to date) and founding works of his career, above all, Maurice. Ivory returns to Italy, where he was born (artistically) in 1957 when he chose Venice as the subject of his short film at the USC cinema school: Venice: Themes and Variations.

Mr&Mrs Bridge
Tratto dall’omonimo romanzo di Evan S. Connel. Sullo sfondo di una Kansas City anni ‘40 i coniugi Bridge vivono un’esistenza tranquilla. La coppia sembra incastrarsi alla perfezione, l’avvocato Mr Bridge (Paul Newman) ha un carattere severo e autoritario, al contrario di Mrs Bridge ( Joanne Woodward), amorevole e remissiva. Ma qualcosa inizia a incrinarsi nel loro rapporto quando i 3 figli si ribellano al controllo del padre, scegliendo per loro una vita diversa.
Inspired by the novel by Evan S. Connell. Set in 1940s Kansas City, the Bridges live a quiet life. The couple seem to fit each other perfectly – Mr Bridge (Paul Newman) is a lawyer, with a severe, authoritarian character, the opposite of Mrs Bridge (Joanne Woodward), who is loving and submissive. But something starts to crack in their relationship when the three children rebel against their father’s control, choosing a different life for themselves.
Casa Howard / Howards End
Casa Howard racconta l’intreccio di tre famiglie molto diverse tra loro. I ricchi Wilcox, gli intellettuali borghesi Schlegel e i Bast, appartenenti alla lower class inglese. La signora Ruth Wilcox morendo lascia in eredità all’amica Margaret Schlegel il suo bene più prezioso: casa Howard. E’ proprio attorno a questa dimora che si intrecciano le trame dei protagonisti. Quel che resta del giorno / The Remains of the Day
Negli anni della Seconda Guerra Mondiale James Stevens lavora come maggiordomo presso Lord Darlington, nobile conservatore con tendenze filonaziste. Capace di interpretare il suo ruolo con dedizione e fedeltà quasi inumane, vacilla solo quando la governante gli dichiara il suo amore. I tempi cambiano, la casa passa a un nuovo proprietario ma Stevens mantiene il suo rapporto distaccato, glaciale, con i sentimenti e la Storia.
During WW2, James Stevens works as a butler for Lord Darlington, an aristocratic Conservative with filo-Nazi tendencies. Able to interpret his role with almost inhuman dedication and loyalty, he only begins to doubt when the housekeeper declares her love for him. Times change, the house passes to a new owner, but Stevens continues his detached, glacial relationship with his feelings and history.

Arrivato in Uruguay, Omar incontra le uniche tre persone in grado di guidarlo dentro il passato di Gund e di dargli l’approvazione per la pubblicazione: il fratello, la vedova e l’amante.
28-year-old Omar Razaghi wins a grant from Kansas University to write a biography of Jules Gund, a South American writer who committed suicide a few years earlier. When he arrives in Uruguay, Omar meets the only three people capable of guiding him into Gund’s past and granting him approval for publication: his brother, widow and lover.
Camera con vista / A Room with a View
In gita a Firenze assieme alla cuginetta Charlotte, Lucy cede alle attenzioni del bel George, suo connazionale, che gli cede gentilmente la sua camera con vista nella pensione dove entrambi alloggiano. Tornata in Inghilterra si fidanza col noioso e altero Cecil prima di ritrovare il giovane conosciuto in Italia e innamorarsene nuovamente. Vincitore di tre premi Oscar: sceneggiatura, costumi e art direction.
On a trip to Florence together with her cousin Charlotte, Lucy gives in to the attentions of her handsome compatriot, George, who kindly allows her to take his room with a view in the boarding house where they are staying. Back in England, she becomes engaged to the boring and subdued Cecil, before once again meeting the young man she knew in Italy and falling in love again. The film was awarded three Oscars, for set, costumes and art direction.
